Shelduck
Photographed on Sunday morning by Slievedooley shore, thanks to land owner Martin Tubridy for his kind permission.
Shelduck are more goose-like in bearing than other ducks; the shelduck is unmistakable in its piebald plumage, set off by
pink legs and a deep red bill. Shelduck feed on mud and in marshy areas, walking slowly on long legs. They are common on costal
areas, especially sandy estuaries and are definitely the most colourful duck in the area. Shelduck are very alert
and will fly away with the slightest noise or disturbance. It is extremely difficult to photograph these birds, as I
have experienced.
