Commentary on Scripture Readings
11 & 12 Feb

First Reading
Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46
In this reading, we are faced with the reality of exclusion. The person who develops leprosy is cast off from his family, his friends, his community and even his religion. We can't help but feel this is unfair. After all, it is not his fault that he is a leper, so surely he doesn't deserve such harsh treatment. Yet how many times do we treat harshly the person who doesn't fit our criteria?

Second Reading
1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1
St Paul is no stranger to exclusion, having faced exclusion himself for the sake of Christ. In this letter, he is explaining what the sacrifice of Christ means for u s- we no longer need to worry about being clean or unclean, about the foods we should or should not eat. Jesus has changed all that. He has brought us all together in him Jews and Gentiles alike. There can be no barriers between us.

Gospel Reading
Mark 1:40-45
Just as the leper in this story moves Jesus with pity, we too are moved; moved by this man's condition and by his faith. It was he who approached Jesus, he who asked for healing. He surrendered himself to Jesus by acknowledging that his healing was entirely in the hands of Jesus and under Jesus' own will. Are we surrendering ourselves to Jesus when we pray, acknowledging his power in all things? Or do we think we know best? This leper, through his faith in Jesus, saw the shackles of his life fall from him at the divine touch. Are we giving Jesus the same chance to change our lives.
